Secondary / Revisional Rhinoplasty

Secondary or revisionary rhinoplasty refers to a rhinoplasty performed to address concerns that have become present after previous rhinoplasty or rhinoplasties. Due to the presence of previous scar tissue, the surgery can sometimes be much more difficult than primary rhinoplasty. As a result, surgery may take longer, and this can sometimes be reflected in total surgery costs.

Secondary rhinoplasty should be undertaken by an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon. In some cases noses may be affected by previous surgery to the extent that cartilage grafts (rib grafts) or other types of grafts (such as fascia from above the ear) may be required, to sufficiently address the structure and function of the nose.

In some cases, patients requiring revision rhinoplasty have frequently undergone more than one rhinoplasty elsewhere by other surgeons, and their main concern is that their nose looks “operated on”. Mr Greensmith may be able to address these changes and work towards a result that aligns with the patient’s personal preferences and features.

Revision rhinoplasty typically takes from three to five hours to complete and may require an overnight hospital stay, particularly if a rib graft is required (see rib graft rhinoplasty).

Patients are counselled that revision surgery can be a more difficult procedure to perform, and that there may be certain limits to what can be achieved.

It is very important that if you are seeing Mr Greensmith for secondary rhinoplasty that you source copies of your operation record(s) from your previous surgeon’s office as well as any photographs taken before and after surgery. These records are very useful to Mr Greensmith in assessing your nose and should be brought to your consultation.

Mr Greensmith will generally not agree to perform revision rhinoplasty surgery for six to 18 months after the last procedure, depending on the concerns being addressed and the patient’s skin type (i.e. thick skin should be left longer due to more swelling persisting for longer). This is because after the last surgery, subtle changes may still be occurring up until this time. Please also advise Mr Greensmith if you have had an cosmetic filler products injected to your nose as this may affect how your nose is assessed.
